What is a word of the year for? A Word of the Year is a powerful idea, focus, or vision to guide one’s actions and viewpoint throughout the upcoming year. I have adopted this intentional practice the last few years, and it has proved a powerful exercise in keeping my focus and perspective on the Lord’s direction for my life. It has allowed me to step into new and uncomfortable areas of personal and professional growth, such as stepping into “NEW”, my word of the year, in 2025 and being willing to step onto stages and speak professionally on trauma, suicidal crisis, faith, and caregiving. The Lord is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid? [Psalm 27: 1 NIV] I don’t know about you, but I needed these words of truth and encouragement to start my day off and lead me in the right way. I find this passage so comforting as I meditate on it.
