Those who need to know they aren’t alone in their battle, not alone in navigating mental crisis caregiving, not alone in supporting their loved one at home with up and down symptoms, not alone in finding resources to help both of them… Not alone, anymore.

What is “The Forgotten Caregiver of Mental Crisis” about?

This book is a comprehensive and compassionate guide for the caregiver who feels desperate, alone, overwhelmed, and exhausted as they fight for their loved one’s life and healing against the battles of PTSD and/or suicidal ideation/plan/attempt. This book comes out of my own personal caregiving story of fighting for the life of my loved one and pursuing healing. If you yourself are a caregiver may you know you are not alone in your battle. Not anymore. You are seen. You are valued. You are mighty.

This book supports the caregiver in caring for their loved one, while not losing themselves in the process. It covers caregiver burden, caregiver self-care and assessment, positive and negative coping strategies, the science of trauma/PTSD, strategies and resources in suicidal caregiving and prevention, as well as Veteran mental health, delivered from an integrated faith and science perspective.

It is for the ones standing guard in the shadows. Those watching someone they love battle nightmares, self-destructive coping, and thoughts of ending their life.

This caregiver guide blends neuroscience, evidence-based practices, medical insight, faith, and raw personal story to offer the reader both validation and practical strategies in navigating the chaos and turmoil of mental crisis caregiving.

You may be asking: Will this help a caregiver of a different condition? Mental Crisis isn’t the condition I care for.

The answer is yes. With 7 chapters specifically written to the caregiver on caring for themselves, this book can come alongside a caregiver of any physical or mental health condition. I am a caregiver for two medical conditions, in addition to having been a caregiver for PTSD and Suicidality.

Caregiver burden doesn’t discriminate. All caregivers carry the weight and responsibility of caring for their loved one for the condition their loved one has. They do it willingly because they care. The condition may be different, but all caregivers carry some level of burden and need support themselves.

The caregiver needs support themselves, both tangibly and emotionally, in order to flourish in their physical, emotional, and mental health. Self-care is necessary. Time away from caregiving and having down-time from caregiving is incredibly important. This usually requires there to be someone who can take over responsibilities for a period of time. Having others who share the responsibilities of caregiving is incredibly needed and research shows sharing the burden/responsibility of caregiving is a protective factor against increased caregiver burden. Shared burden helps distribute the weight and make it easier to carry. This positively benefits the caregiver’s health.
